Marrigje enroled to art school at the age of 54 and graduated 2004 as a painter/photographer major.

She started working on the project Notion of Home in 2003 during a student exchange program in Finland. From there, Marrigje traveled to Eastern Karelia, on the other side of the Russian border. The series Mothersong (Russian Karelia 2003-2005) and The Emperor's Wardrobe (China 2005) were awarded several important photography prizes, such as London Photographic Award and International Photography Awards.

In 2004 in New York, she was awarded the Lucie Award for the New Discovery of the Year with images from the series Mothersong. Her interiors where exhibited in the Netherlands, Finland, the UK, USA, Australia, Russia and China.
